Top Fundraising Ideas for Non-Profit Groups
Fundraising can be tough, especially given the state of the economy over the last six or so years. Charitable giving is down, so it’s essential to be creative when it comes to raising money for your church, school, sports team, or other organization. Thankfully, there are still plenty of methods that are effective!
Here are some top fundraising ideas:
Host a street carnival. Kids love bounce houses and other carnival games, which are fairly cheap to rent. Sell tickets to the carnival, have those in your organization provide the snacks, food, and drinks to sell to those who attend, and everyone will enjoy a great time without spending a ton of money.
Use social media to your advantage. Nowhere else can you put your organization in front of so many people. Create a profile or page on Facebook, Twitter, or other social networks and engage with others. You can increase public awareness of your group and your mission, generate interest, and increase charitable giving! Be sure to join in the conversation even when it isn’t related to your fundraiser so that others feel you’re interested in them as well.
Work with kids? One of the top fundraising ideas for organizations that are involved with children (schools, churches, little league teams, etc.) is to have a “make the grade” fundraiser. Have the kids go out and get pledges for their grades from parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents – perhaps $5 for every A, $3 for every B, etc. Instead of the children keeping the money for themselves, it can all be collected for your group’s needs after report cards come out.
Cash for gold campaign. We’ve all seen those commercials regarding trading in your old or broken gold jewelry for money; you may have even seen signs at local jewelry stores in your area or ads in the newspaper. Have those in your organization request that their family members and friends get out jewelry that’s broken or that they no longer want or need, and trade it in for cash. To make it more fun, create a flyer that lists everyone’s name who donated and post it around town, or praise participants in the newspaper.
Fundraising cards. No list of top fundraising ideas would be complete without fundraising cards! These cards offer “deals” on the backs at about a dozen local merchants such as 10% or 15% off auto services, buy-one-get-one free specials at burger joints, discounts on hair cuts, and more. The specials are good for an entire year so the bearer of the card gets to enjoy savings week after week – and the investment required is just $10 bucks.
Put a local celebrity behind bars. Nothing is more fun than seeing the city mayor or local police chief behind bars! Determine how much money must be raised for the “prisoner” to be released, give the prisoner a cell phone to be used to call family, friends, and everyone else he/she knows to donate money, and have a blast. Of course the prisoner can’t be held forever, but it’s fun for all involved – and you will be surprised how much money can be raised.
Today, raising funds isn’t as easy as it was a decade ago, but it can be accomplished when you come up with a few unique, fun ideas that will capture the interest of your local community. Regardless of what your top fundraising ideas are, include discount cards to enhance your success!
